Esophagitis
What is Esophagitis? Esophagitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Esophagitis may be acute or chronic and has a variety of possible etiologies.
Symptoms of esophagitis may include:
- Heartburn
- Trouble swallowing or pain on swallowing
- Chest pain
- Regurgitation
- Sore throat or cough
What are the Types of Esophagitis?
- Reflux esophagitis, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Infections esophagitis such as candida esophagitis and HSV esophagitis.
- Medication-induced esophagitis may be caused by NSAIDs, tetracyclines, and ferrous sulfate through irritation and direct damage to the esophageal mucosa.
- Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Radiation esophagitis
- Chemical esophagitis caused by exposure to caustic substances such as acids and alkalis.
