Esophagitis

What is Esophagitis? Esophagitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Esophagitis may be acute or chronic and has a variety of possible etiologies.

 

Symptoms of esophagitis may include:

 

  • Heartburn
  • Trouble swallowing or pain on swallowing
  • Chest pain 
  • Regurgitation
  • Sore throat or cough

 

What are the Types of Esophagitis?

 

  • Reflux esophagitis, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) 
  • Infections esophagitis such as candida esophagitis and HSV esophagitis. 
  • Medication-induced esophagitis may be caused by NSAIDs, tetracyclines, and ferrous sulfate through irritation and direct damage to the esophageal mucosa.
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Radiation esophagitis
  • Chemical esophagitis caused by exposure to caustic substances such as acids and alkalis.
