Cellulitis

What is Cellulitis? Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection characterized by red, swollen, warm, and painful skin, typically caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria entering through a break in the skin such as a wound or bug bite. It most commonly affects the lower legs but can occur elsewhere.

Symptoms

Symptoms of cellulitis usually develop suddenly and may include:

  • Red, swollen, tender area on the skin
  • Warmth over the affected area
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Swelling of the nearby lymph nodes
  • Feeling of malaise or overall sickness

Once the bacteria invade the skin, the infection can spread to deeper tissues, potentially entering the bloodstream which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Treatment and Prevention

Certain factors can increase the risk of cellulitis, including a weakened immune system, chronic skin conditions, obesity, and circulatory issues. Doctors commonly prescribe a course of oral antibiotics to treat cellulitis, sometimes accompanying pain relievers. In severe cases, IV antibiotics or abscess drainage surgery might be necessary.

Patients can elevate mild symptoms and aid in healing at home with over-the-counter anti inflammatories, topical creams and home remedies. However, cellulitis often requires medical attention from a healthcare professional in order to avoid complications.
