Carcinogens

What are Carcinogens? A Carcinogen is a substance or agent that has the potential to damage or alter the DNA of cells, which may promote the formation of cancerous cells. Carcinogens can be physical, chemical, or biological in nature.

Types of Carcinogens

Carcinogens are found in many aspects of our environment. Some carcinogenic substances and agents are a part of everyday life such as exposure to UV rays from the sun, car exhaust fumes, and even certain foods. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has reported 256 known substances that are probable carcinogens.

Types of Carcinogens

Chemical Carcinogens

This class of carcinogen includes pollution released into the environment through exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, and industrial by-products

Physical or Environmental Carcinogens

UV rays from sunlight and radiation from radioactive materials are examples of physical carcinogens.

Oncogenic Viruses

Certain viruses, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B and Epstein-Barr, can lead to cancer.
