Precision Oncology

What is Precision Oncology? Precision Oncology is an approach to cancer treatment that involves the use of molecular technologies and genetic testing to predict, diagnose, and treat cancers using precision medicine.

Applications of Precision Medicine in Oncology

 

  • Genetic testing to predict the risk of cancer, such as using sequencing genes to test for the presence of mutations of the APC gene, which is associated with familial adenomatous polyposis.

 

  • Use of biomarkers, such as HER2, to identify breast cancer patients who may benefit from targeted therapy with trastuzumab as an adjunct to chemotherapy.

 

  • Development of adoptive cell therapy to augment the patient’s immune system in fighting cancer by increasing the patient’s T-cells or modifying T-cells to specifically target tumor cells.
