Capsule Endoscopy
What is a Capsule Endoscopy? Capsule endoscopy is a procedure in which a capsule-sized wireless camera is swallowed to take pictures of the digestive tract. As the capsule travels through the digestive tract, it captures thousands of images transmitted to a recorder worn around the patient's waist. Eventually, the capsule is excreted from the body during a bowel movement.
When is a Capsule Endoscopy Necessary?
Capsule Endoscopy allows healthcare providers to visualize and evaluate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which may be necessary to assess and diagnose certain conditions such as:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Cancer
- Celiac disease
- Polyps
