What is Elastin? Elastin is an abundant protein found within various tissues of the body. It provides structural support and flexibility to tissues and organs, allowing them to extend and recoil.

Functions of Elastin

Elastin is synthesized by fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. It works with collagen to provide mechanical stability and resilience to tissues and organs that require flexibility, such as the bladder, lungs, skin, blood vessels, and ligaments. Eastin allows tissues to expand and contract while maintaining the integrity of their structure. 

 

Causes of Elastin Depletion and Deficiency

Elastin depletion and deficiency lead to decreased resilience and functionality across various tissues. Reduced elastin can impact the appearance of the skin, organ function, and mobility. There are several causes for reduced elastin, such as aging, atherosclerosis, emphysema, gene mutations, poor diet, and lifestyle choices. 

 

There isn’t a way to stop the degradation of elastin completely. However, lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a well-balanced diet, limiting sun exposure, and avoiding smoking and pollution exposure, can help mitigate the loss of elastin with age. 

Treatments such as topical retinoids, laser therapies, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels can improve the appearance of skin that has lost elasticity.
