Genetic abnormalities can cause any number of diseases, including neuropsychiatric disorders. Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the prevalence of neuropsychiatric disorders. The World Health Organization has estimated that at least 20% of disabilities worldwide can be attributed, in part, to neuropsychiatric disorders.
However, there is significant heterogeneity in diagnosing and managing these disorders. One factor that can often be overlooked is the role that genetics plays in neuropsychiatric disorders. Just as other diseases can be inherited, so can neuropsychiatric disorders. As more research is conducted on how genetics affects this subset of psychiatry, our understanding of the topic continues to grow.
