What is Neurology? Neurology is the branch of medicine that is devoted to understanding, diagnosing, and managing disorders of the nervous system. These disorders are often complex and include diseases of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

Who Practices Neurology?

Neurologists are board-certified specialists who practice neurology after completing residency. Some may go on to do fellowships in subspecialties, such as neuropsychiatry, headache medicine, and epilepsy.

Which conditions are treated in Neurology?

Neurology comprises a broad set of diseases and disorders, including:

  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Migraines and other headaches
  • Movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s syndrome and Huntington’s disease.
  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Diabetic neuropathy
