Clinical Research

Clinical research is a study that is either conducted directly on human subjects, or uses material of human origin, with the intention of generating useful knowledge about human health and illness, and ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. Clinical research studies are classified either as interventional studies (clinical trials) or observational studies.

Clinical research includes:

  • Patient oriented research
  • Development of new technologies
  • Mechanisms of human disease
  • Therapeutic interventions
  • Clinical trials
  • Epidemiologic and behavioral studies
  • Outcomes research and health services research
